On May 10 1916, at the end of the War of National Independance of Cuba, the Virgen of Charity was proclamed Patron Saint of Cuba. According to the tradition, around 1612, three men, two indians and one afro-Cuban, got lost in sea during a storm. They saw floating, in the water, the statue of the Virgen of Charity.
This legend seems to be true. When the Spanish felt threaten by their enemies, they threw, in the sea, sacred objects because they did not want the pirates to profane them.
Virgen de la Caridad (Virgen of Charity),
Patron Saint of Cuba
